BUKALAPAK "CASH ON DELIVERY" EXPLAINER
BUKALAPAK / MOTION GRAPHICS, ILLUSTRATION / 2022
In 2022 we revamped the illustration-style of Bukalapak. Later that same year, we used it to create a template for motion graphics videos that didn't only look polished, but was very time-efficient to create, allowing us to do more without sacrificing quality.
Bukalapak constantly comes up with new features to better serve its users. Making sure those users understand those new features is equally important. Problem is, we have a grand total of two people in the Motion team for an entire tech giant. Given I had a background in animation, I stepped in with my Illustration team.
We balanced quality and speed by coming up with an art direction that looks polished, easy to execute, and easy to replicate so our internal Motion Team – who were primarily trained in motion design instead of character animation – would be able to produce more videos in the same style. Our solution? Puppets.
Moving around static images would normally feel cheap, but by creating an aesthetic around it, it became part of the charm. We storyboarded the scenes, made the appropriate illustrations, rigged them as puppets using 3D layers in After Effects, used lighting effects to make it feel realistic, and animated it in such a way where it feels like an actual paper puppet being played with.
